Overview

Samsung Messages is one of the most basic features but also one of the most challenging applications to design in mobile phones. While GSMA (GSM Association) proposes technical standards to global mobile network operators, the specific specifications vary among different operators in the US, Europe, China, and else. As Samsung Mobile manufactures hundreds of different models every year, the company needs to unify different Messages UXs as much as possible among different specifications of different operators. Also, the software and UX need to be planned so that they are suitable for the unique UX of Galaxy. I took charge of designing the original UX of the Messages app in Galaxy mobile phones based on the analysis and understanding of users and specifications of different operators.

Bixby

overview

Bixby is a virtual assistant developed from 2016 to 2017 which was first applied to Galaxy S8. I was in charge of creating the initial concept, collaborated with AI designers of Bixby as a UX designer, built over 40,000 instructions and workflows. Bixby is now applied to many of the Samsung devices including smart TV, and home appliances such as robotic vacuum, refrigerator, washing machine, and expanding use cases based on the initial concept.

Samsung dex

overview

Samsung DeX (Desktop eXperience) is an interface where you can seamlessly work, watch, and play by connecting a mobile phone to a monitor so that people can get a PC-like experience. I was managing messaging experience on DeX and primarily focused on how the experience in a mobile phone is seamlessly work in same behavior using keyboard and mouse with a big screen. The product was successfully launched in 2017.

MULTI - SIM

overview

Multi-SIM is a feature mostly used in China, South East Asia, Europe and South America that allows users to insert two or more SIM cards in a mobile phone and switch between the SIMs according to the user’s needs. Although the concept is simple, to apply it to the device, it is essential to understand users who use multi-SIMs and developmental restrictions. In other words, a designer needs to understand what type of users use multi-SIM phones, why they use it, and what apps they use on their phone, as part of the needs and use of the actual users in a comprehensive way. To do this, I communicated with local Samsung Electronics research centers and branches to better understand the real local users. As a result, I developed, approved, and enhanced the Multi-SIM UX. The structure became a global UX that referred to other companies dual-SIM devices

basic principles

I defined how the device works in terms of a data network, Wifi, and payment management to let users manage their payment plan by switching SIM cards and preventing from an additional network connection. To do this, I strictly corporate to the development team to define the principle.

settings

I designed SIM card settings to manage their SIM cards connected to making calls, sending messages, and connecting to a data network.

Applications

I architected multi-SIM experience related to Call, Phone, Messages, Contacts, Quickpanel, and else. To users manage their SIM cards to make a call, send messages, saving contacts, and connect to a data network.

galaxy fold

overview

I was an initial task force for the user experience of Galaxy Fold. Since Samsung put a lot of effort into how to apply curved display technology into mobile devices, I joined the task force as a UX designer who has an industrial background and explores the user scenario of the product. After several years of development, numerous features that our team and I ideate and developed were applied to the device.
